I began my career as an elementary teacher, and loved just about every minute of it! I had a call to teach ever since I was a child, making my brother and sister play school with me every chance I got. I truly love learning, and my goal as a teacher was to help instill the same feeling in my students. Teaching a child to regurgitate content just so they do well on a test never appealed to me as much as teaching them to love the process of learning and helping them refine the skills necessary to find and evaluate relevant information, explore their creativity, and work as a team with their peers to accomplish a goal.
After taking some courses through my district on technology integration and seeing the positive changes it made in my classroom, I earned a Master's of Education degree from Florida Atlantic University in Social Foundations with a focus on Instructional Technology.
I often get asked if I miss teaching. YES! I miss teaching and my students every day. But I took the opportunity to leave the classroom because I see it as a chance to make a larger difference. As a classroom teacher, you have the opportunity to make a huge difference to a small group of students each year. My decision was based on the thought that while I won't have the personal impact that I had as a classroom teacher, if I can make it easier for other teachers to integrate technology to teach students 21st century skills, maybe I can make a larger impact on education as a whole.
On a more personal note, I spent the first couple decades of my life up in the cold of Michigan. When the gray, cold winters finally got the best of me, I made my way to south Florida, where I enjoy the sunshine, warmth, and occasional hurricane. I don't think I am going to move back, much to the dismay of my family. I have a very spoiled 6-year-old rat terrier named Tank (see below). I love using FaceTime with my adorable niece and nephew up in Michigan to keep in touch, as my sister refuses to move to Florida so I can see them more often. In my free time, you might find me running or otherwise working out, reading a book (political thrillers are my favorite), playing Call of Duty on my Xbox (my guilty pleasure), watching a Detroit Red Wings hockey game, or watching ridiculously addicting yet horrendously hideous television shows.
Don't mess with my momma!
